TLR Zine Issue #3
Notes from Sarah James Roman (Bitches page 7 & Pray, Baby page 10):
Sarah James Roman is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago, working primarily in painting, drawing, mixed media, fiber, and sculpture. She attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign before moving to Chicago to continue her BFA at the School of the Art Institute. She draws on her experience with queer identity and Asian diaspora in the suburban landscape of Americana, weaving together themes of femininity, desire, and memory into a world where beauty collides with the grotesque and the violent. @fruitflycake on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/fruitflycake/).

Notes from KaiLee (an inner beauty of the beautiful elf maiden page 14):
Autonomy
This art piece is about inner beauty and reclaiming the power to define it for myself. Beauty is not something tangible or something other people get to measure. It is the quiet truth inside us — the beauty we are sometimes afraid to show, the beauty of our identities and stories.
As a gay, non-binary person with Down syndrome, I have been put into boxes my whole life. I have been told what I can and cannot do, who I should be, and how I should exist. When I was younger, I struggled with low self-esteem because of my disability, my stutter, and being queer. But even then, I knew who I was. I knew I wanted to be called KaiLee. I questioned my gender and realized I did not identify with any gender. Choosing my name and claiming my identity was my transformation.
This piece is about autonomy. It is about control — not the kind forced on me, but the control I claim for myself. I get to define my beauty. I get to define my future. I am beautiful exactly as I am.

Kodama (木霊, 木魂 or 木魅) are spirits in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees. They are depicted in the Studio Ghibli movie, Princess Mononoke, with white faces and three circles for eyes and a mouth. Caring for the forest brings prosperity, by any means necessary.
The Kodama, fiercely protective, becomes defensive once a tree weeps. Remove disease with caution.
Use the campsite rule when you are older: leave the younger person in a better place than you found them.
